Scunthorpe MP "seeking legal advice" over expenses

Scunthorpe MP Elliot Morley's told Viking FM he is seeking legal advice after he was suspended from the parliamentary Labour Party over his expenses claims.

But he refused to answer any questions about why he claimed £16,000 for a mortgage which he'd already paid off.

Morley, who's been Scunthorpe's MP for more than 20 years, had his expense claims splashed across the Daily Telegraph newspaper on Thursday.

The paper claims Mr Morley claimed back £16,000 for a mortgage on his home, "which did not exist."

"It is the most serious [disclosure] to be uncovered so far during the week-long investigation into MPs expenses," the paper said.

The paper claims in 2007 Mr Morley was claiming £800 a month for mortgage interested on his Scunthorpe property. But the mortgage was paid off in March 2006, meaning he was claiming money he did not spend.

The MP is also accused of "flipping" his London and Scunthorpe homes.

Mr Morley has repaid the money, and blames a mistake, but there are still calls for a police enquiry into his actions. Gordon Brown is holding urgent talks about it.

Viking FM's reporter Katie Hall, who is outside Mr Morley's home in Winterton, Scunthorpe told us police officers are guarding the front of the house.

"Mr. Morley last night said he paid the money back two weeks ago and accepts full responsibility" she said.
